PERFORMANCE: Nina Simone – Legacy with Josette Bushell-Mingo OBE

  • Milton Court Concert Hall Silk Street London, England, EC2Y 9BH United Kingdom (map)

Olivier Award-nominated performer and activist Josette Bushell-Mingo OBE revisits her acclaimed international production of Nina: A Story about Me and Nina Simone through music, film and discussion.

Nina – A Story About Me and Nina Simone enjoyed international acclaim when it opened in 2017. Juxtaposing Simone’s brave and daring legacy and the fight against racism with persisting societal inequalities, the timely piece questioned how far we’ve really come.

Rehearsals and performances were filmed by Swedish director Lamin Daniel Jadama for the documentary CALL NINA! shown on Swedish Television in 2021. The film follows Josette Bushell-Mingo OBE behind the scenes and shows how art can provide space for debate and change, exploring her ongoing relationship with Simone and the continued, urgent need for anti-racist resistance.

The evening features the London premiere of the film CALL NINA! followed by a panel discussion led by Dr. Javeria K Shah and finishes with a concert from Bushell-Mingo and a quartet conducted by Shapor Bastansiar.
