A True Story of Prejudice and Murder
Drinks Reception for LGBTQ+ History Month
JAMES AND JOHN
Sir Chris Bryant MP, Bloomsbury and the City of London Corporation invite you to a reception celebrate the publication of James and John: A True Story of Prejudice and Murder.
Published during LGBTQ+ History Month 2024, James and John tells the story of what it meant to be gay in early 19th-century Britain – through the lives of the last two men to be hanged for homosexuality in Britain.
Unravelling the deep prejudices of 19th century British society, from the gallows crowds to the ruling classes, Bryant delves deep into the archives to meticulously recreate the lives and trial of two men whose names are known to history, but whose story has been lost, until now.
The evening will include a speech from Sir Chris Bryant MP. Copies of James and John will be available for purchase.
Places are strictly limited and only those who have received email confirmation of their attendance will be admitted. All guests will be required to bring photo ID.
RSVPs for this event are now closed. If you have any questions, please email belonging@cityoflondon.gov.uk
