City Chaplain Educator
Location: City of London (Square Mile)
Reports to: Dean of Religious Life, Faith in The City (FiTC)
Hours: One day per week (0.2 FTE)
Remuneration: £43,000 FTE, pro rata (£8,600 for one day per week on consultancy basis).
Term: One-year renewable, subject to funding.
About your role
Our mission is to help the Square Mile become the world’s most religiously literate, faith-friendly, and socially connected global business district by supporting people, strengthening organisations, and building trust across communities.
In practice, that means integrating pastoral care, religious literacy, and civic partnership into the daily life of the world’s leading financial centre. Working alongside businesses, faith institutions, and civic partners, our City Chaplaincy provides confidential pastoral care, raises religious literacy across the corporate sector, and helps mark the major moments of the religious year in ways that bring people together. In this first round of recruitment, we are seeking to fill the roles of the Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh and Hindu City Chaplain Educators.
Purpose
To bring pastoral care, religious literacy and a sense of shared community to people who work, live, and pass through the Square Mile. City Chaplain Educators are appointed to serve both those of their own faith tradition and the traditions of others across the Square Mile: supporting individuals of all beliefs and none, equipping firms to understand the faith lives of their people and working alongside City partners to mark major moments of the religious year, meaningful, in the heart of London’s business district.
The role has four core areas of work: pastoral care, training, creating content, and supporting the wider work of FiTC.
Key Responsibilities
Pastoral care
Provide confidential pastoral and wellbeing support to workers, residents and visitors across the Square Mile.
Serve as an active member of the chaplaincy team, offering a visible, mobile pastoral presence by bicycle or mobility vehicle and responding rapidly where and when needed.
Support people through personal, professional, spiritual challenges, and respond to critical incidents, bereavements and emergencies affecting City workplaces and communities.
Help create and sustain a genuine sense of community in the City, connecting people and fostering belonging in an environment that can otherwise feel transient.
Training and religious literacy
Teach on Faith in The City’s religious literacy kitemark programme.
Deliver workshops and reflections on faith, identity, resilience, inclusion and leadership for businesses and civic partners.
Creating content
Work with City partners and faith institutions to co-create meaningful experiences for major festivals, faith-specific and multifaith learning, commemorations and civic occasions.
Build and steward relationships with faith communities, employee networks, businesses, local authorities and civic institutions.
Representation and leadership
Contribute to the Centre’s vision, values, and strategic objectives, and to shared chaplaincy programmes.
Maintain appropriate records, reporting, evaluation, and impact measurement.
Various administrative responsibilities such as content writing for dedicated websites, marketing and promotion of chaplaincy offering.
Promote equality, diversity, inclusion, and freedom of religion or belief.
Person Specification
Essential
Knowledgeable and credible in their own faith tradition; an ordained, experienced or recognised leader within that tradition.
In good standing with their faith community.
Experience of chaplaincy and/or the world of business in the City.
Able to hold their own at Board level, with the gravitas and professional credibility to operate in a senior corporate environment.
Excellent communication, teaching and relationship-building skills.
A genuine commitment to pluralism, interfaith engagement, and freedom of religion or belief.
Desirable
Established relationships with relevant communal, civic, or business networks.
Experience of online marketing and promoting chaplaincy activities.
Experience designing or delivering educational or religious literacy programmes.
General Expectations
Work as part of a respectful team alongside Chaplains as well as staff from all faiths and none.
Operate with significant professional autonomy.
Work collaboratively across faith communities, corporate partners, local authorities, and community organisations.
Respond to generic pastoral emergencies in the City.
Undertake ongoing professional development.
