Charles Ignatius Sancho was born on a slave ship on the Atlantic Ocean in 1729, yet he became a writer, composer, shopkeeper and respected ‘man of letters’ in 18th century London.
Sancho&Me - For One Night Only will reveal his story in an extraordinary performance by Paterson Joseph, delivered directly to the audience, part-improvised each night and built around his recent bestselling novel The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho. Paterson’s performance will be underscored by music composed by Charles Ignatius Sancho in various forms, arranged and performed on stage by Musical Director Ben Park, linking the music of Charles Ignatius with his very own story.
Sancho&Me - For One Night Only explores ideas of belonging, language, education, slavery, commerce, violence, threat, politics, music and love – and where these themes intersect with Paterson’s own story of being Black and British.
This compelling, one-off performance at London Metropolitan Archives takes place alongside the Unforgotten Lives exhibition, which features the original voting record of Charles Ignatius Sancho, thought to be the first person of African heritage to vote in an election in Britain. Ticket holders will have the opportunity to explore the exhibition before the show begins.
Copies of The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho by Paterson Joseph will be available to purchase on the night and there will be an opportunity to have your book signed after the performance.
